Eliza Buckminster Lee letter to James Munroe & Co., 1846 Jan. 14.

The collection consists of a letter to her publisher, James Munroe and Co., 14 Jan. 1846, requesting four copies of her translation of Walt and Vult. She directs that the copies be sent to Ralph Waldo Emerson, Thomas Carlyle, Prof. Norton at Cambridge, and Prof. Schele de Vere at Virginia. She also requests two copies for her own household.

James Munroe and Company, publishers and booksellers, were located at 134 Washington Street in Boston and also in Cambridge, Mass., during the middle part of the nineteenth century. The head of the company was James Munroe (1808-1861), who was born in Lexington, Mass., the son of James Munroe (1775-1848) and Margaret Watson Munroe ( - ). Eliza Buckminster Lee was born in New Hampshire and gained a classical education and appreciation for literature from her father, Rev. Joseph Buckminster.
